CHS Swim Team Wins 2023 LHSAA Division I State Title

The CHS Swim Team won its 9th overall LHSAA Division 1 State Championship in Sulphur on Saturday, November 18th. The title was the swim team’s 2nd in the last 4 years and its 8th title in the last 13 years.

The Bears won 3 events, recorded 3 All-American consideration times, and used overwhelming depth with 15 swimmers scoring points for the team to claim the championship over 2-time defending champion Jesuit by 110 points.

The relay team of Jackson DeJean, Alex Cooper, James Stuckey, and Sammy Smith won the 200 free relay with an All-American consideration time and with a margin of victory of more than 5 seconds over the 2nd place Jays and narrowly missed the LHSAA composite record, already owned by the Bears for their performance in 2014 by .13 seconds.

The relay team of Jackson DeJean, Alex Cooper, Eric Jurkovic, and Sammy Smith set the school record in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:08.18. That is also an All-American consideration time and just shy of the current LHSAA record.

Senior Alex Cooper won the state championship in the 200 freestyle and his teammate Jackson DeJean was 2nd. Other medalists for the Bears included Sammy Smith who was 2nd in the 50 & 100 free. In the 50 Sammy Smith swam an All-American consideration time of 20.85.
