As the calendar turns to 2024, the Catholic High basketball team is looking to round into form with district play approaching. The Bears took a big step in the right direction last night with a 54-46 home win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
After trailing 42-36 midway through the fourth quarter, CHS went on an 18-4 run to end the game to erase the deficit and earn the victory. Twelve different Bears saw the floor as head coach Derrick Jones '96 used the team's depth to wear down the Falcons.
"It's so important that we get those guys opportunities to affect the game," Jones said. "That second group gives us a lot of energy and athleticism that helps us wear our opponents down."
The Bears were led by junior Matthew Trahan who posted a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Juniors Tate McCurry and Nico Jones added 14 points and 11 points respectively.
CHS improved to 10-7 on the season. The team returns to the court tomorrow night as the Bears host Walker. Freshmen tip off at 5 p.m. followed by JV at 6 p.m. and Varsity at 7:15 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on VSN.
