Former CHS Golfers Find Collegiate Success

It has been a banner couple of weeks for former Catholic High golfers at the college level. In mid-September, 2025 CHS graduate David Marsh struck first by winning his first college golf tournament at the Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tennessee. Marsh, a sophomore at Southeastern Louisiana, shot 4 under par over 54 holes to defeat 68 other college golfers and take home his first individual title.

It didn't take long for 2026 CHS graduate Drew Prieto to respond to Marsh's big win. In only his second start of his freshman year, Prieto tasted victory for his Sewanee Tigers in the Whitworth Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay in Washington State. Chambers Bay was famously host to the 2015 U.S. Open and Prieto shot 4 under par over 36 holes to tie one of his teammates for the medalist title.

"We are so proud of Drew and David as we are all of our former players. It takes an incredible amount of skill and hard work to win a college golf tournament. Years ago when Grizzly Great Phil Schmitt joined our golf staff, I looked at the mission of Catholic High School and it led me to change some thinking. At Catholic, we want our graduates to leave here knowing that God loves them and we want to instruct them so that they can become upright husbands, fathers, and leaders in the community. Those are all forward thinking ideas and goals so we wanted our golf program to reflect that. We have a role to do all that we can to set them up for success at the college level once they leave us by coaching them like college coaches. It's one of our golf programs pillars," commented head coach Christopher Davis.

David Marsh added, "Coach Davis and Coach Schmitt always taught us the ability to use our head and think around the golf course. Everyone at the college level hits it great and has the potential to win, it's all about how you can outsmart them and play the course in the right way that gives you the advantage over 54 holes."

Prieto added, "At Catholic, above all we learned discipline and commitment to the standard that others before us built. Boring golf wins golf tournaments and you practice to make you feel confident and at ease in high pressure situations. Our coaches coached at Catholic held us to a standard and that gave us confidence and when you have incredible confidence, you can dominate the field."
