CHS Indoor Track & Field Wins 2nd Consecutive State Title

On February 21, the CHS Indoor Track & Field team dominated the competition and captured the program's second consecutive LHSAA Division I state championship.

The Bears were led by the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams, who both earned first-place finishes. See the full breakdown of the meet below.

Field Events:

·       Shot put – Senior Jack Torrance and Junior Hayden Marcantel – Jack went into the finals, and on his last throw, Jack threw a new school record! His throw of 17.70m (58’1’’) put Jack on the podium for a 2nd place finish. Junior Hayden Marcantel finished in 8th place, also throwing a PR of 14.47m (47’5’’).

·       High jump – Sophomore Brady Biossat and Junior Kaleb Casto both scored points towards the team total. Brady finished 4th with a jump of 6’0.75’’, which is a PR. Kaleb, who was his first time competing in state, finished 6th with a PR of 5’10’’.

·       Pole Vault – Junior John Henry Overton finished in 2nd place, behind Blake Guidry from E.D. White. Both went into a jump off, unfortunately, Guidry hit his last jump, putting John Henry at 2nd

Running Events:

·       400m dash – Seniors Harrison Lalande and Henry Mensman placed 2nd and 3rd. Harrison Lalande ran a PR time of 49.43, and Henry Mensman finished in 3rd with a time of 49.61.

·       800m run – Junior Patrick Kelly ran a PR time of 1:59.98, which also put him #10 all-time in CHS history. He finished in 6th place. William DeCuir, after just running the 1600m, doubled up and ran the 800, finishing 11th with a time of 2:08.36.

·       1600m run – Junior William DeCuir set a new school record in the 1600m with a time of 4:19.82 and finished on the podium in 3rd place. Sophomore Gus Juneau finished in 6th place, with a time of 4:22.68, which was also a PR run for him, as well as William DeCuir.

·       3200m run – Senior Peter Watson finished 5th with a time of 9:35.32.

·       60m hurdles – Senior Jude Schlegel and Junior John Van Gaudiano both snuck into the finals from the preliminary round. Jude was .06 seconds off the podium, with a PR time of 8.30, which also moved him up the CHS all-time list. Junior John Van Gaudiano finished in 8th place, with a time of 8.44.

·       4x200m Relay – Running a PR time of 1:29.43, this relay team secured 1st place and was less than a second off from setting the school record. This relay team consisted of Senior Joshua Dowdell, Sophomore Gregory Williams, Senior Harrison Lalande, and Senior Henry Mensman.

·       4x400m Relay – By this point the meet had already been won; this 4x400m relay team didn’t want anything less than finishing in 1st place. They ran a season-best time of 3:24.91 and beat out Zachary to finish 1st. Going into the anchor leg (Henry Mensman) Henry was behind Zachary anchor leg by a couple of seconds, and that didn’t stop Henry from passing him with a little over 80-100 meters left in the race. This relay consisted of Senior Harrison Lalande, Junior Hudson Lalande, Senior Cooper Alligood, and Senior Henry Mensman.

·       4x800m Relay – This relay team started the meet finishing in 2nd place and running a PR time of 8:08.54. This relay team also moved up in the all-time CHS list. This team consisted of Junior Patrick Kelly, Senior Ethan Pham, Senior Peter Watson, and Junior William DeCuir.
